Phoenicians.es is an information resource for interested English speakers. Until now, the vast majority of research on the subject has been published by Spanish and German scholars, so we aim to present a summary of this intriguing civilization's impact on both Spain and the Western World to a wider audience.

We focus on the archaeological sites and museums in Southern Spain containing Phoenician remains and relics. We welcome comments, suggestions, photographs and any insight to help build a free and comprehensive source of information about the Phoenician presence in Spain 3,000 years ago.

We hope to encourage visitors to the Phoenician settlements, sanctuaries and necropolises dotted along the coast of Southern Spain, including regions like Axarquia (where Toscanos, Morro de Mezquitilla and Trayamar are located), which do not have heritage as culturally important as their Phoenician footprint.

Apart from founding the first early democratic city in Westen Europe, the significance of the Phoenicians today is their model of peaceful trade and migration, the transmission of knowledge and skills between east and west, and the benefits for future generations.

An appreciation of the Phoenician impact can also result in better protection of the archaeological sites that have so far been discovered, which is sadly lacking in an age of limited government funding for cultural preservation.

Dedicated to the late Maria Eugenia Aubet who with her deep insight cast light on the shadowy, overlooked and historic story of the Phoenicians in Spain.
